MS1 Summer International Project: Information Guide

This document provides an overview of the application process, resources to find a faculty mentor and answers frequently asked questions. Please read this first!

MS1 Summer Application

This is the Application required by IMSE. Please note there are several required parts to the application all of which must be submitted to Maritza Montalvo (mmontalv@med.cornell.edu).

MS1 Selected Summer Opportunities

A selection of WCM global health faculty research projects to help you find potential mentors for a summer project.

*Please note: Students applying to work with WCM Global Health Center Faculty should Contact Megan Urry at meu7003@med.cornell.edu to inquire about the Global Health Center Application requirements and timeline which is usually due by December and is separate from the required IMSE Application.

Overview of Application Timeline

Fall Term MS1
    • Students should begin to think about summer projects. It never is too early to begin to think about summer. Review the WCM Student Stories from the Field and the Student Previous Placements pages to learn about opportunities abroad and to explore the global health projects previously undertaken by students.
    • Attend the FallInternational Fellows Reception – held annually in October to showcase the work of the recent MS1 student summer research projects. Meet and network with WCM Global Health Faculty to hear about summer opportunities.
    • Send emails and meet potential faculty mentors informally to see if they have projects which may be a good fit for you and your skill set.
    • Schedule a meeting with IMSE Directors (Dr. Laura Greisman and Dr. Radhika Sundararajan @ IMSEdirectors@med.cornell.edu) for guidance and advice.

December/January
    • Students should decide whether they want to take an international summer elective and should start reaching out to IMSE faculty and potential global health mentors to learn more about potential placements.

February
    • Students should complete the IMSE application and all supporting materials which is due early MARCH.

March/April
    • Applications are reviewed by the International Electives Committee and conditional/final approvals should be completed by the end of March.
    • During this time students should follow the guidelines outlined in the MS1 Summer Project Application Guide and Student Travel Handbook to fulfil pre-departure requirements.

MS1 Summer International Project: Pre- and Post-Travel Requirements

Pre-Travel Requirements

All students who participate in a mentored international summer project are required to:

1)    Be in good academic standing.

2)    Complete all required IMSE/Registrar paperwork (Consent, Waiver & Release forms)

3)    Register travel with WCM Risk Management and the State Department

4)    Ensure your passport and travel documents are up to date

5)    Obtain the appropriate visa (if necessary)

6)    Schedule a Travel Clinic Appointment to discuss vaccines and prophylaxis (if necessary)

7)    Complete Required Online Ethics training

8)    Attend Pre-Departure Workshop

Post-Travel Requirements

All students who participate in a mentored international summer project are required to:

1)    Prepare a poster for display at the Fall International Fellows Reception (held in October)

2)    Submit a narrative summary (Impact Statement) within 4 weeks of return. 

*Guidelines for these requirements are found in the Student Travel Handbook.

*Please note: Failure to comply with required pre- and post-travel requirements in a timey manner may jeopardize your qualification to receive funding and/or result in a professionalism report.
